Here at DCDesign, I use WordPress as my primary design and development platform. You have probabaly heard about WordPress before but there are really two WordPress options. The first, WordPress.com is aimed at the do-it-yourself blogger. The second is WordPress.org which is aimed at those who web design in their background. Let’s talk a little bit about WordPress and why I believe it’s the right platform for all of your website needs.

Here is what Wikipedia.com has to say about WordPress:

WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. WordPress is used by over 14.7% of Alexa Internet’s “top 1 million” websites and as of August 2011 manages 22% of all new websites. WordPress is currently the most popular blogging system in use on the Web, powering over 60 million websites worldwide.

As of December 2011, version 3.0 had been downloaded over 65 million times.

Here’s what all of  that means to you:

  • “free and open source” – You won’t spend money on the basic framework itself because people, all across the globe, who love coding, are contribuiting to the improvement of WordPress everyday. You can spend your money on what really matters, making your site count and look good.
  • “based on PHP and MySQL” – This just means the web server that your site is hosted on does all the work and is not relient on your site visitors having an amazing computer to experience your web site in a positive way. We’ve all been to those websites that take forever to load. Part of the issue is how the site is designed and how well your computer is performing. Good web hosts are always ensuring their servers (ultimatley your site) are running at peak performance.
  • “plug-in architecture and a template system” – The ultimate in customization without having to spend rediculous amounts of time or money doing the customizations.
  • “used by over 14.7%” – The web design community loves WordPress, the web site owners love WordPress, and it’s not going anywhere. You can feel good that the engine behind your website is safe built on a WordPress platform.
  • “WordPress is currently the most popular” – Again, your site is being run by the best engine available.

WordPress, regardless of .com or .org, was designed with the blogger in mind. However, as sated above, WordPress is also a Content Management System (CMS) which makes it super flexible and powerful at the same time. In fact, using it’s blogging capabilities is just one technique that can make your website, personal or professional, appear more relevant to search engines, thereby increasing your exposure when people search for your name or service. You can read more about this in our own blog, DCTalks.
